How to find breakout apps on Google Play
A simple, repeatable definition of a breakout app and the one API query that lists them every week.
Young and already large
Google Play does not publish growth rates, but it publishes two things that together come close: when an app was first released and which install band it has reached. An app that is three weeks old and already in the 1M+ band grew fast, whatever the exact curve looked like.
The query
curl -H "X-API-Key: $API_KEY" \ "https://apksurge.com/api/v1/search?released_from=2026-08-01&min_installs=1000000&sort=installs"
The answer lists every app first released on or after the date with at least a million installs, the biggest first. Each result has the title, developer, category, install band, exact install estimate and rating.
Tuning the thresholds
- For a weekly watch, use a 30-day window and a 100K+ floor.
- For games, add
category=GAME_ACTIONor another game genre: games break out faster than utilities. - To skip clones riding a brand name, add
min_ratings=1000so only apps with a real audience remain.
Reading the result
Compare this week’s list with last week’s. New names are the fresh breakouts; apps that stay for months are the ones that kept their momentum.
